I would use a smart object to preserve an image's original characteristics. Also, I would be allowed to edit the image without possibly messing up the layer.
4.What are the advantages of using the distort transform tool over free transform or
the perspective control of the transform tool?
The advantage to using the distort transform tool is that the tool allows you the abilities of both by being able to change the angle of how to viewer sees it and allows you to move it completely. Also, with this tool we are able change the central point that the image will change around.
